Everyone has a different idea of the perfect beach, so no two people would agree on the order of beaches that stretch from the rocky coast of Maine to the golden sands along the New Jersey coast.
For some, the perfect beach is a small remote cove or secluded behind miles of undeveloped dunes. Others miss the hustle and bustle of an old-fashioned seaside resort with a busy boardwalk, soft ice cream and carousel. Some people love to combine beach time with oceanfront theme parks and other tourist attractions. Beachgoers also vary in their preferred water temperature, from the refreshing surf of Maine to the warmer waters of Cape May.
Ranking beaches is a tricky business at best, so instead we've arranged them geographically, from Maine to New Jersey. We have tried to mix the list to have something for all tastes, although of course none of them is an isolated little cove that is a secret to all but a few. You'll have to find it for yourself - and keep it a secret. But these beaches have enough space for everyone, and on a hot summer day it may seem like everyone is there.
All of these places are popular to visit, so expect parking difficulties unless you arrive early in the morning and don't expect to be alone. Remember, these beaches are so popular for a reason: they're the best.

1. Misquamicut State Beach, Rhode Island
Despite its small size, Rhode Island has as much as 384 miles of coastline along the Atlantic Ocean and Narragansett Bay. Its beaches are legendary - no more so than Misquamicut in Westerly. Its gradual descent into the water and gentle waves make it a beach especially popular with families.
In addition to a wide beach of soft sand, Misquamicut State Beach has shaded picnic areas and other activities, including frequent evening concerts and fireworks.
Nearby Watch Hill is a well-maintained and upscale old summer resort with a historic carousel that is a hit with children. It is home to one of Rhode Island's best resorts.
2.Hampton Beach, New Hampshire
New Hampshire makes the most of its 13-mile coastline with five public beaches, three of which are state parks. The largest of these is Hampton Beach, a long stretch of white sand that is consistently rated as one of the cleanest beaches in the United States. The beach town is an unashamedly clean seaside resort with a boardwalk, fried dough, saucy T-shirts, candy shops and arcades.
At the center of this is the Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom, built in 1899 as a community entertainment center, now a live music and comedy venue featuring famous performers and bands. In keeping with its bustling atmosphere, Hampton Beach hosts frequent festivals: sand sculptures in June, the Children's Festival in August, weekly fireworks, and live music every night at the Sea Shell Stage.
3.Race Point Beach, Massachusetts
Part of the Cape Cod National Seashore, Race Point Beach in Provincetown is at the farthest end of Cape Cod, the long arm of Massachusetts that curves between Cape Cod Bay and the open Atlantic.
Backed by miles of protected sand dunes and facing the Cape ocean, Race Point tends to have strong waves and swells. This makes it dangerous for serious swimming, but the shallow waters are good for fun surfing. And for beachgoers who like a bit of space, it's spectacular enough that it's often listed as one of the best beaches in the States.
4. Coney Island Beach, New York
Possibly the most iconic old-style beach of all, Brooklyn's Coney Island is everything you've imagined: neon lights, noise, arcades, tacky memorabilia, crowds, a boardwalk, the legendary Cyclone roller coaster, and hot dogs from the original Nathan's Coney Island restaurant.
Two amusement parks provide a getaway from the three-mile sandy beach and rolling waves. It can be hard to find a few feet of sand on hot summer weekends, but you'll always find plenty to do here. It's a stage as well as a beach.
5.Wells and Ogunquit Beaches, Maine
A long barrier beach separates the salt marshes of the Wells Estuary National Research Reserve from the Atlantic Ocean, stretching from the city of Wells south to Ogunquit. Drake Island, Wells, Crescent, Moody, Footbridge and Ogunquit beaches all connect together, each with plenty of soft sand and families of their own who return year after year.
Accommodation and tourism facilities stretch along Route 1, which runs parallel to the coast. Of the many, Ogunquit is the better base, with luxury resorts, fine dining and shopping, and a particularly gentle beach - ideal for families. Don't miss the Marginal Way walk from Ogunquit to Perkins Cove for beautiful views of the ocean and several small beaches fringed by rocks.
6.Weirs Beach, New Hampshire
Weirs Beach is located near Laconia in New Hampshire's Lakes region and is a favorite freshwater swimming spot for visitors. It occupies a stretch of sand on the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee (locally referred to simply as "the great lake"), within the Endicott Rock State Historic Site.
While the beach itself doesn't offer many amenities, it is at the end of the Wiers promenade, which has plenty of restaurants, shops and entertainment, including classic arcades. There is also a dock for the M/S Mount Washington and the US Mailboat M/V Sophie C, which offer cruise rides and occasional cruises.
In the evening, visitors can watch movies on one of the three screens at the Weirs Beach drive-in theater, and if the weather isn't cooperating, the FunSpot is just down the street and provides plenty of indoor entertainment, including bowling and the world's largest collection of arcade video games.
7.Head of the Meadow and Ballston Beach, Massachusetts
Both in Truro, on the outer tip of Cape Cod, Head of the Meadow and Ballston Beach are idyllic stretches of sand facing the Atlantic, backed by dunes and sand bluffs that rise 100 feet high. Accessed through the dunes by paths lined with dune grasses, Head of the Meadow has two areas: one on the town beach, the other on the Cape Cod National Coast. The latter has a lifeguard.
Surfing is permitted at Head of the Meadow, outside of the designated swimming area. Both beaches are accessible from Route 6.
8.Narragansett Bay Beaches, Rhode Island
There's no need to make hard choices between beaches along the coast from Narragansett resort to Point Judith. The 20-acre Narragansett Town Beach stretches for a full mile starting on the outskirts of town and is a favorite with surfers who have their own designated area.
There is plenty of water for swimmers here and on the long golden beaches further south: Matunuck Beach State Park, East Matunuck State Beach, Roger W. Wheeler State Beach, Scarborough State Beach and Narragansett Municipal Beach. They all have changing rooms and parking (if you plan a few days to try them all, you can buy a parking pass, which is good at all state parks).
9. Wingaersheek Beach, Massachusetts
Stretching along the tidal Annisquam River and Ipswich Bay north of Boston, Wingaersheek Beach has crystal clear waters and a very gentle slope that stretches more than half a mile wide at low tide.
The shallow water makes this beach in Gloucester a favorite for families to visit, especially when the receding tide reveals huge rock formations to climb and tide pools filled with snails and other small sea creatures to explore.
In summer, you will find changing rooms and food vendors on the beach.
10.Easton's Beach/First Beach, Rhode Island
Easton's Beach, also called First Beach, offers ocean swimming, as well as plenty of activities for children. Younger children will love the historic merry-go-round and playground, while teens can take advantage of the skate park and listen to live music.

Beach amenities include a changing room with lockers available, as well as a picnic area, playground, and nature trails. There is also an 18-hole mini golf course on site, as well as a collection of coastal carnival rides, from rides for kids to exciting rides for teens and adults. The park also has a coin-operated arcade that offers all the classic games, including pinball.
Visitors can also enjoy live entertainment on the Boardwalk Stage, as well as special events during the summer months, including dancing and car shows.
