The beach with the most sharks in the world is an hour from Orlando

Around 40 species of sharks swim around New Smyrna Beach in Florida.

There is much talk about Australia and the frequent attacks on surfers and bathers, but the beach with the largest number of sharks in the world is not in those parts. The most dangerous and crowded for this reckless animal is New Smyrna Beach, in Florida. It is one hour from Orlando and around 40 different species are usually seen on its coasts per year.

Three hours from Miami is the New Smyrna beach, one of the most popular and the favorite of surfers and bathers who are not scared despite the number of 238 documented shark attacks so far.

New Smyrna: the beach with the most sharks

They call it the "shark capital" and it is visited precisely by those who enjoy seeing or running into these animals. In fact, in New Smyrna Beach a large part of the tourist offer has to do with different types of encounters with these animals.

Connoisseurs say that on this beach, just an hour from Orlando, there are so many sharks that any swimmer who enters its waters will inevitably find themselves within three meters of one

Three meters is the permitted safety distance along 27 kilometers of beach. You can find gray, tiger, hammerhead and bull sharks, among other lesser-known species.

It is the busiest beach for sharks on the planet. However, 10 million visitors come to bathe there every year, attracted by various water sports such as kitesurfing or surfing. Nothing stops them: although in 2019 there were 66 shark attacks -of which 4 cost the victim his life-, statistics indicate that only 0.00024% of the people who bathe in what is known as the "capital of the sharks” have suffered some type of attack.

The record of attacks was set in August 2019, when three bathers were attacked in less than 24 hours.

15% of shark attacks in the world occur only on this beach, which is why it is also known as 'the world capital of shark attacks'.

Not suitable for selacophobes

It is a place not suitable for selacophobes. What are we talking about? The irrational fear that many people feel towards sharks is called selacophobia. The cinema has built them as the perfect predator and, although in their underwater territory they have that fame well earned, the big screen condemned them to the worst of places.

Experts say the fear is irrational because the reality is that sharks often have better things to do than attack a human. Most attacks on people occur because the animal mistakes the surfer or swimmer for a seal and opens its teeth to take a bite.

Another large portion of cases occurs when the number of people and sharks in the water is too high.

The beaches with the most sharks

You already know that sharks can be found in oceans around the world, inhabiting both temperate and tropical waters. If you have a phobia of them, there are some of the beaches where more attacks on bathers and tourists have occurred, sometimes with a not very pleasant ending.

Pernambuco, Brazil

One of the most feared is on the list of beaches with the most sharks. It is in Brazil, in the state of Pernambuco. Although this region has the most spectacular beaches in the country, in many you will see a sign that warns “Caution. Shark Zone”.

What's more: the government closed almost 60 kilometers of crystalline beaches due to continued shark attacks on bathers. Since 1992 sharks have killed 18 people.

The high mortality rate in these waters seems to be due to overfishing, which implies a lack of food for sharks.

Second Beach, South Africa

It is another of the most dangerous beaches in the world. It is on the so-called "Wild Coast" at the last tip of South Africa. In its waters, bull shark attacks have been frequent, known as the pit bulls of the ocean for their love of biting and shaking bodies to cause fatal injuries.

Velzyland Beach, Hawaii

Velzyland Beach is located on the island of Oahu in Hawaii. This island is well known for its idyllic white sand beaches and turquoise waters, with palm trees and cabanas, but also for being the Eden of sharks.

Here there are 41 different species of sharks, among which the most deadly for humans stand out: the white shark, the bull shark and the tiger.

New South Wales, Australia

Australia is the favorite country for surfers, but it is also one of the countries with the most deadly shark attacks in the world, and specifically, the New South Wales area.

They have tried to protect their beaches with safety nets and surveillance drones, but these beaches have seen more than 170 shark attacks and 50 deadly attacks.
You already know the beaches with the most sharks in the world. Some believe that being afraid of it is ridiculous. But... They scare. Whether it's because of shark movies or because of the stories we hear, some become terrified.
