Around 40 species of sharks swim around New Smyrna Beach in Florida.
There is much talk about Australia and the frequent attacks on surfers and bathers, but the beach with the largest number of sharks in the world is not in those parts. The most dangerous and crowded for this reckless animal is New Smyrna Beach, in Florida. It is one hour from Orlando and around 40 different species are usually seen on its coasts per year.
Three hours from Miami is the New Smyrna beach, one of the most popular and the favorite of surfers and bathers who are not scared despite the number of 238 documented shark attacks so far.
New Smyrna: the beach with the most sharks
They call it the "shark capital" and it is visited precisely by those who enjoy seeing or running into these animals. In fact, in New Smyrna Beach a large part of the tourist offer has to do with different types of encounters with these animals.
Connoisseurs say that on this beach, just an hour from Orlando, there are so many sharks that any swimmer who enters its waters will inevitably find themselves within three meters of one
Three meters is the permitted safety distance along 27 kilometers of beach. You can find gray, tiger, hammerhead and bull sharks, among other lesser-known species.
It is the busiest beach for sharks on the planet. However, 10 million visitors come to bathe there every year, attracted by various water sports such as kitesurfing or surfing. Nothing stops them: although in 2019 there were 66 shark attacks -of which 4 cost the victim his life-, statistics indicate that only 0.00024% of the people who bathe in what is known as the "capital of the sharks” have suffered some type of attack.
The record of attacks was set in August 2019, when three bathers were attacked in less than 24 hours.
15% of shark attacks in the world occur only on this beach, which is why it is also known as 'the world capital of shark attacks'.
Not suitable for selacophobes
It is a place not suitable for selacophobes. What are we talking about? The irrational fear that many people feel towards sharks is called selacophobia. The cinema has built them as the perfect predator and, although in their underwater territory they have that fame well earned, the big screen condemned them to the worst of places.
Experts say the fear is irrational because the reality is that sharks often have better things to do than attack a human. Most attacks on people occur because the animal mistakes the surfer or swimmer for a seal and opens its teeth to take a bite.
