Route of the Parks of Patagonia
The 17 parks on the route protect 11.5 million hectares, equivalent to almost three times the size of Switzerland and more than twice that of Costa Rica, they integrate the southern highway, the Patagonian channels and the End of the World Route.
The route is promoted by Tompkins Conservation, a foundation that seeks "Chile to be internationally recognized for having the most spectacular scenic route in the world, and thus become a benchmark for conservation-based economic development," said Carolina Morgado, executive director of the Foundation.
Seen on the map, the chain of parks weaves together a long "green patch" that covers a third of the south of the country, fragmented by canals and lagoons, and is the habitat of a rich native flora and fauna.
How is the route of the Route of the Parks
As it is an area that is not always easily accessible due to its orography and extension and few populated areas, which often flank the southern highway, the initiative contemplates a web page ( www.rutadelosparques.org ) that provides travelers with unique information on this territory, grouping in a single site suggested excursions, transport tips, accommodation, and more than 50 trails traced with GPS.
"The idea is that visitors can go along the route, part or all, depending on the time they have and their interests," explains Morgado. "In the suggested trips section of our website we have different options for people to You can plan and do this spectacular trip self-guided or through a travel agency or tour operator”, says the director of Tompkins Conservation.
On the web you can also download the trekking trails of the national parks, also classified into routes of different difficulties
It is a scenic route suitable for all audiences, since it offers different options according to the interests of each visitor, with trails of varying difficulty, and it can also be traveled by car, bicycle, motorcycle, etc.
A good part of these parks and other protected areas in the country were created by former president Michelle Bachelet during her last term, (2014-2018), leaving 14 new marine protected areas (1.31 million km2) and the Network of Parks of the Patagonia.
The best time of year to do it? "Every season has its charm, but the weather improves between October and May," the Foundation advises.
